NINTH DISTRICT REPORT

Report of the 9th District Branch, March 13, 2023

The Medical Society of the State of New York’s 9th District Branch is comprised of the following county medical societies: Dutchess; Orange; Putnam; Rockland and Westchester.

Below is the Report of Activities within the 9th District Branch of MSSNY as reported by County:

  • The delegation of the 9th District met several times over January and February where the details of the upcoming House of Delegates were discussed.  Resolutions submitted by the delegates were reviewed and approved.  The 9th District has submitted 7 resolutions to the House of Delegates for 2023.

Westchester County

  • The Westchester Academy of Medicine once again contributed to the Westchester Science and Engineering Fair scholarship fund.  WAM will sponsor scholarships for several winners in categories related to medicine and medical research.
  • WCMS will be planning an in-person networking event on May 4, 2023 at the Captain Lawrence Brewery in Elmsford.  All members and potential members are welcome to join us for an evening of networking and vendors.
  • The Westchester Academy of Medicine will be hosting our Annual Student wine tasting event on Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at Prospero Winery in Pleasantville.  All of our physician members are invited to join us and speak to the local New York Medical College students about their specialties.
  • WCMS has scheduled out annual membership meeting for Thursday, June 8, 2023.  The meeting will be held at the Westchester Country Club in Rye, NY.  Invitations will follow.
  • WCMS will be participating in MSSNY Lobby Day on Tuesday, March 14, 2023.  We have reached out to schedule meetings with our local legislators where we will discuss many items outlined in the MSSNY legislative program and the Governor’s budget.  We have invited all of our members to participate and register with MSSNY.
  • WCMS President, Bruce Molinelli, MD has reached out to local hospital staff leaders asking to meet in person in the near future to discuss legislative priorities and give updates as to what the County Society and MSSNY are doing in order to engage all of our area hospitals.
  • WCMS has ramped up its social media presence in the last several months thanks to our new Communications and Public Relations Committee Chair, Dr. Anais Carniciu.  The goal is to engage early-career physicians and keep them informed with legislative and event info.

Dutchess County

  • Dutchess County Medical Society was very active in the effort to sway Hochul to veto the Wrongful death bill, including placing an ad and Letter to the Editor in the Poughkeepsie Journal in October of 2022.  We had over 200 physicians sign letters to Hochul at two of our gatherings, all of which were sent to her office on Albany.
  • Bill Barrick has submitted resolutions to MSSNY for approval.
  • We have added Dutchess County Health Commissioner, Dr. Livia Santiago-Rosado, to our newsletter with her own column.
  • Our last events, one held in May 2022 at the Culinary Institute, featured a panel on “Osteoporosis – bone health for all,” and our last meeting held at Shadows in Poughkeepsie, featured a panel on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.”  We will hold out next Meedical Society gathering on 4/27/23, with a panel focused on Physician Burnout.
  • El Kareh’s term ends in October 2023, and our new president is slated to be Dr. Adam Rubinstein.
