NOMINATING PROCESS

The election process is started in mid-July when the county medical societies and district branch presidents are contacted to request representatives for appointment to the Nominating Committee. The President of MSSNY is then provided with those nominations and the Nominating Committee is appointed according to the Bylaws Article XI, Section 2 which states:

The Nominating Committee shall be appointed by the president from a list of not less than three nor more than five names submitted by the respective district branches, in conformity with Article V, Section 2, paragraph 3. It shall consist of 11 members, 1 from each district branch and 2 members at large.

In the event that a member of the Nominating Committee who has been selected as the representative of a particular district branch (or an alternate) shall be unable to attend the meeting of this committee, the president shall appoint an at large member from the district branch whose representative is absent, to
represent the interests of that district on the Nominating Committee. It shall be the duty of this committee to propose and nominate members of the Medical Society of the State of New York for all vacancies to be filled at the ensuing annual meeting of the House of Delegates. These recommendations shall be made
to the House of Delegates in the same manner as prescribed in Article X, Section 1, paragraph 2:

Annual reports of officers, Council commissions and committees, Board of Trustees, Judicial Council, district branches, and special committees shall be printed at least one month before the meeting of the House of Delegates and sent to the members of the reference committees appointed according to
paragraph 1, for their preliminary consideration.

The Nominating Committee selections of the President are then approved by Council at the November meeting.

Nomination of candidates for election as officers, councilors, trustees, and delegates to the New York Delegation to the AMA, are solicited in early June from county medical societies and district branches. Nominations are accepted until August 31 and a slate of candidates for each position to be filled is created.

This slate of candidates is considered by the Nominating Committee in January of the year in which the election is to be held. The results of that meeting are published as the Report of the Nominating Committee and become the ballot which is voted in the House of Delegates on Saturday (for Officers, Councilors and Trustees) and Sunday (for the New York Delegation to AMA).
