Physicians Struggle with the “Imposter Phenomenon”

According to a Mayo Clinic study, physicians are more likely to suffer from the “imposter phenomenon” than other professionals. The “Imposter Phenomenon” is when one feels inadequate due to personal skills, ability, effort, and competence. Physicians feeling imposter phenomenon feel lower professional fulfillment than other professionals. Researchers surveyed 3,116 physicians between November 20, 2020, and February 16, 2021, and according to the study published in September, one in four physicians reported feeling frequent or intense imposter phenomenon. The phenomenon is also associated with a higher frequency of physician burnout.
